View humpback whales and other marine mammals in Frederick Sound during a full day tour! During the summer the whales are here to eat (a thousand pounds a day!) so the whales are always moving around looking for the most concentrated schools of food. It’s not uncommon to see 20 to 30 whales, and sometimes we are lucky enough to witness them cooperatively feeding (bubble net feeding). We sometimes also spot orcas, porpoises, sea lions, harbor seals, eagles and a variety of sea birds. Along the shoreline, we keep an eye out for bears, moose, deer and wolves.
Our small, private group tours means a maximum of 6 guests for a personalized experience. All tours include tons of natural history information, and the boat is equipped with a hydrophone so we can listen to the whales as well as watch!
LeConte Glacier is 18 miles from Petersburg and is the southernmost tidewater glacier in North America. It’s at the end of a 12 mile-long fjord that has been carved out of the surrounding coastal mountain range by glaciers over the course of thousands of years. LeConte is very active and is constantly fracturing, calving and filling the bay with hundreds of icebergs. The bay has 2000 foot rock walls that have been polished by the ice and thundering waterfalls. It is a magical place to explore. While harbor seals are present throughout the year, May-June is generally pupping season so is a great time for viewing harbor seal pups and bald eagles. Mountain goats often adorn the rock walls throughout the summer season.
Our small, private group tours means we take a maximum of 6 guests and includes tons of natural history information!

I’ve lived on or near the water since childhood and have spent the majority of my years boating.
Of all the wildlife and things to see from the boat, Jax’s favorite activity is watching icebergs!
Kelly Bakos initially started a water taxi service called Kupreanof Kab to run visitors between Petersburg and the Kupreanof State Dock for hiking excursions. Over the years she expanded access to farther destinations and also offered day tours. As FauneVoyage Tours, we now offer small, private group adventures in the heart of the breathtaking Tongass National Forest and specialize in supporting scientists, photographers and filmmakers.

As you’ve probably gathered, we are passionate about this gorgeous, special part of the world. Kelly has a B.S. in Wildlife Biology and is very involved with the Petersburg Marine Mammal Center (she is the Executive Director), which is part of the North Pacific Marine Mammal Stranding Response Network. Our organization supports researchers who come to study the whales, leads marine science education programs, and assists stranded and entangled marine mammals. In the shoulder and off-season, Kelly switches hats and is an award-winning wildlife filmmaker. Southeast Alaska is her playground, and she loves to share it with visitors!
We use a 26-foot welded aluminum boat with a heated cabin and 250 horsepower outboard to quickly and safely get to the best areas. It’s an all-around good vessel for both comfort during tours and getting us into tight spots for water taxi drop-offs. This boat has comfortable seating, large windows, custom kayak storage and ample stern space for both sightseeing and gear storage. We can comfortably transport up to six guests and their gear for an adventure of a lifetime!
We’re pretty good naturalists, but the boat has a complete library if we can’t answer your questions. We limit our tours to private parties of up to 6 people so you’ll always have the ear of the captain and will never have to fight for the best view or a good seat!!
Unbelievably fantastic experience
A half day glacier visit followed by two days whale watching left us with unforgetable experiences and memories, way beyond our wildest hopes.
Captain Kelly was superb! Extremely knowledgeable and thoughtful, making sure that we saw everything and totally respectful of the environment and the wildlife. It was a real pleasure spending time with her. Her knowledge, skill and intuition had us pushing gently through brilliant blue ice to reach the nose of the glacier, watching seals, sea lions, porpoise and eagles, and sitting on deck listening to and watching numerous whales around the five finger islands, seeing their behaviour change as we heard sounds of breaching and fin slapping from the other side of the sound. Just so fascinating and magical!
To top it all, Kelly managed to find humpback whales bubble net fishing on both days. Time after time, up to 22 whales dived down, to emerge in a feeding frenzy some minutes later, with the gulls joining in from the air to pick up any herring that escaped the “net”. We could not only see it all playing out in front of us, but also hear the whale hunting conversation going on under water through the hydrophone. A truly incredible event to witness first hand.
A massive thank you Kelly for making our visit so extraordinary and wonderful!
The Bucket List
Take the tangent.
Last minute Maritime Ferry and a Capitain named Kelly.
An English farmer dreams one day of seeing Whales and a Glacier up close. Two young forest service girls stand next next to him as the big blue iceberg rolls over. And they all scream with rare Joy. Kelly did not quickly exit. She knew the moment. You want to go with a girl like Kelly. Not only does she have vast knowledge, the girl can run a boat! Amongst mostly men.
Be very proud of her Scott.
Regards, Kerry and the awkward Brit.
Did the Saturday whale watching tour last weekend with Kelly and it was a great experience! We saw tons of humpback whales and even got to see a group of 20+ whales working together to perform the bubble netting. We even got to see two full breaches. I have been on whale watching tours before, but this one was definitely the best due to the smaller group size and the amount of whales we saw.
